Although you might not have your date or dress yet for homecoming, one thing is for sure, the theme has been set.

Sophomore Student Leadership members made the final decision the week of Sept. 4: “A Night Under the Stars” would be this year’s theme.

“To me, this theme means that we all get to become stars on homecoming night,” said Sofia Feijoo, sophomore class president. “When you walk into the dance, you will see a skyline. As you continue to walk down the hallway toward the Commons, we hope that our decorations will make you feel transported into a world of stars.”

Student Leadership chose this theme with the goal of transporting dance-goers into a new world for an evening.

“The  overall atmosphere that we are trying to achieve at this homecoming is a unique, diverse dance with endless possibilities,” said Senior Henry Deap, school wide vice president.

Student Leadership members aren’t the only ones who help plan the dance; the entire student body has the opportunity to decide the theme, build floats for the homecoming parade and decorate for the dance.

“The process used to determine the theme is actually quite straightforward. Student Leadership emails the entire school body a survey with pre-approved themes that students can vote on,” said Deap. “The winning vote then becomes the theme for our homecoming. We choose to do it this way because it allows the student body to get involved and vote on their desired theme. Therefore, everyone can have a say in the choosing of the dance.”

The planning process doesn’t end there.

“After we got almost 300 votes for this theme, we talked as a class board about whether or not we had enough ideas for this theme to actually work out. We then came up with ideas for the floats, court announcements, the VIP room, as well as the actual dance,” said Feijoo.

Some other themes discussed included Circus, Hollywood, A Night in Athens, To the Moon and Back, Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mystic Galaxy, Africa, U.S.A. and City of Stars.

Out of these choices, many members of Student Leadership liked and had ideas for the City of Stars theme, developed from the popular movie, “La La Land”.

“‘La La Land’ was a super popular movie this year, so we thought it would be cool to incorporate some ideas from it into homecoming. After conducting a school wide survey, “A Night Under the Stars” won, so we worked to incorporate more stars into the ideas we already had from that theme,” said Feijoo.

If you missed the opportunity to vote on the theme, there are still ways to get involved with the planning of this dance.

Said Deap, “We need a lot of help when decorating the gym, so please feel free to spread the word about getting involved with the school and helping decorate future dances.”
