According to CBS News, an approximated 103.4 million people watched the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 4.

However, football is not the only reason the Super Bowl is such a popular event in the U.S. The halftime show, this year starring former *NSYNC member and current solo artist Justin Timberlake, creates just as much excitement as the football game itself.

Timberlake’s performance was filled with plenty of dancing, singing and a large variety of music. There was no lack of movement as the star ran between multiple stages on walkways lined by lights. Using the entirety of the U.S. Bank Stadium, the star started with “Filthy” in the concourse, ran between multiple stages on the field itself and ended with “Can’t Stop the Feeling” in the audience, where he took a selfie with a young fan.

This year, the alternative rock and pop singer sang for almost 14 minutes, virtually on his own. No special guests were physically present with the star on stage (other than his personal band, the Tennessee Kids, of course), but Timberlake sang a duet with a hologram of the late singer, Prince.

The two covered Prince’s song “I Would Die for You” in front of his home town of Minneapolis, Minn., as the audience held up their flashlights to sway along.

This part of the performance was not done without controversy, though. The hologram was projected on a white curtain hung behind Timberlake as he sat beside an ivory-colored grand piano. The controversy stemmed from Prince fans who defended Prince’s personal opinion against using holograms of late singers.

In addition to the Prince cover, Timberlake sang an abundance of his own music, singing selections like “Señorita” from his very first album released in 2002, and “Filthy” from his brand new album Man of the Woods, the first album Timberlake has released since 2013.

Other song selections included “Rock Your Body,” “Sexy Back” to the beat of “Supplies,” “My Love,” “Cry Me a River,” “Suit and Tie,” “Until the End of Time” and “Mirrors.” This large variety allowed his fans from various points in his career to sing along.

Timberlake’s performance included an abundance of choreography that was perfectly in sync with his backup dancers. During the song “Suit and Tie,” the star’s performance included choreography with the microphone stand as a marching band played in the background.

At times, Timberlake’s intricate choreography took precedence over his singing, which allowed for the music to easily overpower the star’s voice as his projection came in and out of focus.

However, throughout the entire performance, whether he was dancing or singing, Timberlake appeared to be having a blast with his performance.

The singer interacted with the audience at multiple points during the performance, even ending with a fan selfie. While moving between stages, Timberlake would high five fans lining the walkways and even those who were a part of the performance on the field. Occasionally, he made small comments to the 70,000 fans in the stadium in addition to the millions of others watching from their TV screens at home. For example, he shouted, “How we doin’ over here?” as he walked toward a new group of fans, or “You look so beautiful right now” when the stadium filled with flashlights during the ballad. These types of interactions made him appear more personable.

Out of five stars, Timberlake’s performance deserves a four. The artist was able to keep the audience entertained without needing to use any crazy stunts. His minimalistic performance (in comparison to previous shows, such as Lady Gaga’s jump from the roof or Katy Perry’s ride on a lion) allowed him to appear more charming. Timberlake seemed to be having more fun with his performance than he would have if he was simply trying to impress the audience. The viewers could clearly tell that he was cherishing this opportunity rather than simply trying to make it into the history books.

Also, because of the large venue and use of multiple stages, Timberlake was able to keep the viewers’ eyes moving, as well as increase the number of fans he was able to interact with. Even the lighting was balanced nicely where it could highlight Timberlake’s performance without being overpowering or blinding.

Timberlake loses a star for his lack of singing. He focused a lot on the choreography and performance aspect of the show. This is extremely important for a large-scale performance, such as the Super Bowl halftime show; however, while highlighting his dancing skills, he neglected his vocals, relying heavily on background tracks.

Also, in an attempt to promote his new album Man of the Woods, Timberlake wore a camouflage shirt and pants outfit. Halfway through the performance, he changed into a camouflage blazer. Although this outfit fits with his new album, it clashed with the sleek, angular props.

Timberlake’s minimalistic performance truly highlighted his talents. The star’s use of movement, instruments and even his interaction with the audience added to the entertainment. Overall, Timberlake appeared to be having a blast. As he said in 2012, “I think the only way to achieve something that’s classic is to be in the moment,” and it was apparent in his performance: he was living in the moment.
