It’s a trope any horror fan is well acquainted with: a cemetery haunted by its own inhabitants. Unfortunate souls unable to pass over into the afterlife. It is the reason many people avoid cemeteries in their day-to-day life. But is there any truth to these stories? Do we know if it’s even possible? All that is brought into question when arriving at White Cemetery on Cuba Road in unincorporated Barrington.
One thing is for sure, the rumors surrounding this place are dark. There are tales of random glowing orbs, footsteps, and figures vanishing into the distance. Is there any truth to these allegations? If so, who are these lost souls haunting the fabled White Cemetery? Well, I decided to check it out for myself. As my bestie and I drove down the long winding road that passes by the cemetery, we prepared ourselves for the worst. We stepped out of the car to find a scene surprisingly… peaceful? There were no signs of any spirits. Maybe they don’t exist. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe some of the ghosts just don’t like humans. Either way it was taking them a long time to show up. It wasn’t until we were almost leaving that we heard it. Footsteps, the first sign of haunting, followed by the faint gleam of an orb, and the sudden realization that I had an English paper to get home to.
Our night of ghost hunting may have been cut short, but it was well worth it. It was a wonderful opportunity for adventure and bonding. Whether those sounds were that of a ghost or a neighbor walking their dog, I can’t say for sure. But what I can say is this: whoever or whatever it might have been deserves peace.
