Mundelein welcomes new coaches Gregg Winter, Maya Gold, and Christina Newsom to the athletics team to further support aspiring athletes.
Gregg Winter who now is the coach for the Varsity Girls Tennis team stated, “I love every minute of being a coach, I love the opportunity to work with student athletes in the high schools. I was fortunate as a player to have such wonderful coaches and I want to give my players that same opportunity.”
Winter displays his gratitude towards his team and the school while sharing his goal to leave an encouraging mark on his new players and previous players alike. Winter has previously coached girls tennis at Stevenson High School for four seasons and has also coached baseball at Rochelle Zelle High School.
Winter added, “I want all the players in the program to grow not only as a player but as a teammate and role model. The wins and losses are not what is important, it’s the experience and long lasting great memories.”
He hopes the girls leave the season with bright smiles and joyful memories that they had made together and only a minor bittersweet taste in the recollections of wins and losses.
Previous assistant dance coach, now Head Coach Maya Gold shared, “I have danced all my life and knew that my future would include dancing and teaching others one of my true passions. I knew I wanted to come back and get to work with young athletes and be a part of their high school dance team journey.”
Gold wants to further express her passion for dance through teaching and through her dancers. She hopes to see her team improve as she continues to encourage them on the sidelines. She wants the dancers to find success in their ‘dance team journey’.
MHS has also welcomed new Head Cheerleading Coach Christina Newsom. She shares what she hopes to add to the MHS athletics community as a newcomer.
“I hope to provide opportunities for all team members in our program to learn and grow as positive leaders and representatives of the community. As well as providing opportunities to challenge themselves in order to gain skills and experiences that will benefit their future.”
Newsom aspires to see the team grow both in and out of the school setting to become respective members of society. She hopes to set the team up for success both in the present and future while being an active mentor as the season progresses. As this is her first year taking on a high school cheerleading team, she hopes to learn alongside her team.
Gold, Winter, and Newsom all share the common goal of seeing their players not only grow as athletes, but as people too.
