Staff Recommendation: We Are Not Free by Traci Chee
We Are Not Free by Traci Chee is a historical fiction book based around World War II following the lives of Japanese teenagers who were displaced from their homes and put into internment camps. The book divides each chapter into the perspectives of each teen sharing their experiences within the camps. They touch base on their hardships, familial status and even small bits of romantical life; overall expanding on what they do to make best of their conditions and what they do to survive the hate put upon them. This book allows readers to see a possible interpretation of the war through the eyes of the oppressed, straying away from the social studies class general overview; allowing a deeper understanding and education of the war.
