The varsity girls lacrosse team kicked off their 2024 season in different style than years previously. At their March 14th season opener against Huntley the girls dawned the new uniforms, notably with shorts instead of skirts. The change was initially questioned as skirts are, as senior and co-captain of the team Ella Terrell puts it, “A lacrosse thing that makes us unique from other sports.”
However, the adjustment was soon adapted too. Senior co-captain Gianna Feather said, “At first I thought I would like them because I’d been playing in a skirt for so long but honestly I don’t mind it as much as I thought I would.”
Feather and Terrell are two of twelve seniors on the team along with the team’s two senior managers, Nic Killackey and Alexis Silva, and third co-captain Lucy Moran. The rest are as follows: Sophia Buono, Allie Oztunguc, Kenadi Norman, Charlotte Oliver, Angelina Kangail, Karina Reyes, Angelica Zillmer, Elyse Lee, and Elena Wiechering.
Senior Feather notes of the team atmosphere, “The trust, communication, and determination our team has on the field shows how well we work as a team—but beyond that, the bond and closeness our team has is my favorite part because it’s like being apart of a family.”
The tight knit dynamic of the team is echoed by Terrell, “My favorite part of playing on the team is that I love being surrounded by all the girls who are so supportive of each other. No matter what the outcome is, everyone has a great attitude and we always have a good time.”
Last week the girls took home their first win 17-9 against Lake Forest Academy. There’s still work to be done as the players look to what they hope for the future of the season.
Senior Sophia Buono said, “I hope we have the opportunity to do well against some of our bigger rivals like Libertyville. But primarily just have a fun final year of lax since played all four years of high school.”
Feather echoed the “beat Libertyville” sentiment saying, “ I hope we beat libertyville. We beat them last year and it was one of the most fun games I have played in all four years on varsity.”
The face-off against Libertyville High School takes place May 7th and is one of the last five games of the season. It takes place at home so show up and support your mustangs.
