As many people have become aware, AI has taken a massive step forward in its progress in making everyday activities easier. AI today has not only made some people lots and lots of money but also impacted the way people go about their daily lives. AI can now be used in so many different and unique ways. Rather, you need help in school, checking the weather, or even just using your phone.
“I think AI is just a reality of the development of technology,” said world studies teacher Andrew Hirshman, “So I think AI less in terms of its good or bad and just it is,” he continued.
AI today has become this powerful and amazing new way of getting the exact information you need in seconds. Now with that said, people can just as easily take advantage of AI as they would use it to benefit themselves.
“So take power. Power is just the reality of the social world. Power can be good and can be bad. It’s like water, if you’re in a desert waters really good, if you’re stuck in the middle of the ocean stuck on a raft water is not so good,” added Hirshman, “So AI is just the reality of the development of human technology and it’s up to us to navigate it the best way we can.”
With all things taken into account, AI is not so bad but rather depends on when or where you are using it. For example, if you’re taking a test and know you’re not supposed to be using AI then it’s probably not the best time to use it, but if you are stuck on a question on the homework and want to see what possible ways to answer the question are then AI is useful and not bad at all.
“I think AI is a great tool to help anyone whether you’re a student, teacher, or anyone. There’s so much you can do with it that it can help you with,” stated personal finance teacher Rahul Sethna, “Technology is still emerging and you have to have safeguards and different things like that, I kind of think of the Terminator.”
AI as a whole has not only taken the world by storm with its rapid increase in popularity and usage toward the world but there should be some sort of limit when it comes to school work or places where they want you to use your own thinking.
“Obviously you don’t want students creating an essay and having them cheat but I think it is like an equalizer. For example, if you write an essay you can then run it through AI to get grammar errors and make it better,” Sethna added, “If it’s a tool to help them learn I think it’s like an equalizer in terms of people that may not have some of those abilities for tutors or things like that.”
When at your house and you’re doing homework or writing something and the people you are with are unable to help you with the topic or assignment you are working on, AI can step in and help you better understand what the topic is and how to do the assignment. On the other hand, people can just ask AI to do the whole assignment and not have them learn how to do it which allows them to not learn the skill, but just be done with the assignment they don’t want to do and they didn’t have to do.
“I think that AI is an extremely useful tool that can be utilized to help humans for everyday activities,” said junior Charles Fisher, “Recently, I had to file my income taxes, and I used TurboTax, which is backed by their AI tools which helped me to file my taxes in under 20 minutes.”
AI can be used in many ways to help people do harder tasks like filing taxes and shorten the time it would take someone to finish filing them without help. AI is used to give you answers or feedback right away which theoretically would make humans work fast and things they use AI for less time consuming.
“I think that it depends whether students should be able to use AI for school work. for essays, I think that students should be allowed to use AI for learning about General topics for a research project, similar to how Wikipedia can be used to start research for a paper,” Charles continued, “ however, I do not think that it should be allowed for students to write their entire essays with. to me, it seems like the entire purpose of writing is diminished when we start relying on AI to write for us.”
When a student is writing an essay the entire point is to have them write it themselves and not have an AI do it for them so they can develop the skill for themselves. If the student was using AI for a research purpose then it should be allowed or even encouraged because the AI will give you great information and facts.
