With the end of the 2025 MLB regular season right around the corner and the postseason coming up, it’s time to reflect on the regular season and how it went for teams as well as players all around the league.
Starting with a reflection on the 2025 MLB regular season let’s dive into some of the teams records. At the middle of September, the division leaders of each division in the American League are as follows:
- The American League East divisional leaders are the Toronto Blue Jays.
- The leaders of the American League Central are the Detroit Tigers.
- The last divisional leader in the American League are the Houston Astros who currently lead the American League West.
Moving onto the National League divisional leaders they are also as follows:
- The leaders of the National League East are the Philadelphia Phillies.
- The divisional leaders for the National League Central are the Milwaukee Brewers.
- Lastly for the National League the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the National League West.
It’ll be interesting to see how the season shakes out and who ends up taking home each division with such close races in many of the divisions. Currently, the team with the best record in baseball are the Milwaukee Brewers with a record of 89-58. The Brewers are a surprise team that many thought wouldn’t have this good of record this deep into the season but the Brewers got very hot after the all-star break and went on multiple 10+ game winning streaks and their longest winning streak being 14 games which is now a franchise record.
Now that we’ve discussed the top of the league, let’s take a look at the bottom of the barrel, the worst of the worst this MLB season. That team would be none else than the Colorado Rockies. Currently with a record of 40-105, the worst in baseball it’s fair to say the Rockies have had a rough year. To cut the Rockies some slack it is rough to play in the same division Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and the Arizona Diamondbacks who are all 70+ win teams. To recap, the most successful team so far in the regular season has been the Milwaukee Brewers and the team who wants to forget this season is the Colorado Rockies.
Moving on to some player success you’ll see some correlation between the top teams in the league this season and the top players as all of them play for top teams in both leagues. Some top players in the American League according to MLB’s Instagram include Cal Raleigh (Seattle Mariners) and Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers).
While Tarik Skubal is the only player who is on a divisional leading team both Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh’s teams are near the top of their own divisions. Tarik Skubal is a starting pitcher who is near the top of the American League Cy Young award leaderboards which is the award for the best pitcher in the American League. He has pitched phenomenal all season long and is one of the primary reasons the Detroit Tigers are at the top of their division.
Moving on Cal Raleigh who is the catcher for the Seattle Mariners has also had a phenomenal season. The catcher has hit 50+ home runs and played spectacular defense behind the plate for the Mariners all season long which is why you see him on the top of many sources American League Most Valuable Player award leaderboards. This award goes to the Most Valuable Player in both leagues but Cal Raleigh seems to be running away with the award for the American League. Both Skubal and Raleigh are well deserving of the publicity they have received this MLB season as both players have been outstanding.
Moving onto the National League, two top players have been Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates).
While Skenes’ Pirates have struggled this season and are at the bottom of the National League Central, Skenes has looked phenomenal. He has pitched expertly all season long and while his win-lose record isn’t the best, it is merely because of the fact that the Pirates’ are just not the best. Skenes has pitched to a very low ERA, sitting around 2.00-3.00 all season long with many spectacular performances. Similar to Skubal, Skenes’ has been at the top of many people’s Cy Young Award leaderboards for the National League. Moving on to Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If you’ve been following baseball for the last couple years you’ll know the name Shohei Ohtani. The starting pitcher/designated itter has been playing some of the greatest baseball the sport has ever seen and this season has been no exception. He’s hit 45+ home runs with a good batting average and in his brief pitching appearances has looked very good. He’s at the top of many sources’ National League MVP leaderboards as his spectacular play has helped the Dodgers win many games this season and he has helped them to be currently leading their division. To summarize, don’t be surprised to see Skenes’, Ohtani’s, Skubal’s, or Raleigh’s names pop up when MLB season awards are announced.
Two MHS sophomores were asked who they think will bring home the MVP’s and the Cy Young’s in both the National and American League. For starters, Sophomore Jacob Matyasik shared that he believes that Kyle Schrawber will take home the National League MVP and Aaron Judge will take home the American League MVP. Moving to Cy Young’s Matyasik believes Tarik Skubal will win American League Cy Young and Zack Wheeler will win National League Cy Young.
Sophomore Marek Smith agreed with Matyasik’s take on Judge bringing home American League honors but he believes Shohei Ohtani will bring home the National League MVP. Smith also believes that Tarik Skubal will win the American League Cy Young but it will be Paul Skenes who takes home the National League Cy Young award. It’s clear that many baseball fans and analysts share common view points when it comes to the winners of the various awards.
Lastly, with the end of the regular season near we can look ahead to the post season. Throughout the season various sources such as ESPN, Bleacher Report, and MLB.com like to predict how the post season would look like if it ended that day. While the season is almost over, let’s look at what some of those sport outlets say currently.
