2019 Sports recap

From boys and girls swimming sending multiple competitors to state to dance placing eighth in state, MHS has seen many successes in its sports this year. Here is a recap of the state achievements made in the 2018-19 school year so far:

Boys cross country: The team qualified for IHSA State Finals at Detweiller Park, Peoria, on Nov. 3. This is the second year in which the team has qualified by placing second at sectionals. The boys placed 19th overall while Junior Dillion Blake placed 12th individually to earn an all-state honors.

   Boys golf: Senior Trevor Neumaier was the only competitor to advance to the IHSA state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf course in Bloomington, Ill., held from Oct.12-13 for the boys varsity golf team. He placed 41 out of 120 individuals and had to endure golfing in the snow as winter began early in 2018.

   Girls tennis: Senior Isabel Alviar and Junior Mikayla Edquiban qualified for 2A Doubles for girls tennis. The IHSA state tournament took place from Oct. 18-20 at Buffalo Grove High School. Alviar and Edquiban made it all the way to the fifth round of the Doubles Consolation Bracket before losing 8-5 to Elle Stewart and Jayne Fradin of Glenbrook South High School. This was Alviar’s third year making it to the state finals but her first year qualifying for doubles instead of singles. This is Edquiban’s second year making it to the state finals in doubles but made it with Junior Alexis Hyde last year.

   Girls swimming and diving: In the 2018 season for girls swimming, the team sent Sophomore Adry Kasemets, Juniors Mackenzie Strong and Angela Bowes and Seniors Kate Hay and Angela Kordik to the IHSA state swimming and diving meet at Evanston High School from Nov. 16-17. Strong qualified for state in all four of her events as well as placed in the state finals meet for all four events. She also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle for Athletes with Disabilities and the 100-yard freestyle for Athletes with Disabilities. She additionally placed third in the 50-yard freestyle for Athletes with Disabilities and the 100-yard breaststroke for Athletes with Disabilities. The 200-yard Medley Relay of Kasemets, Kordik, Hay and Bowes placed 22nd in the preliminaries on Friday, falling short of making it to the finals on Saturday. Kasemets qualified for state for the 200-yard Individual Medley and placed 36th in the preliminaries, not making it to the finals on Saturday.

   Boys swimming and diving: This year boys swimming and diving sent Freshmen Omar Fathallah and Aaron Anastos, Junior Parker Geary and Seniors Ryan Zentz and Hunter Magee to the IHSA state swimming and diving meet at New Trier High School from Feb. 22-Feb. 23. Fathallah placed 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in the finals on Saturday while falling short of making the finals for the 50-yard freestyle on Friday where he placed 22nd in the preliminaries. Both relays fell short of making it to the finals on Saturday; the 400-yard free relay team of Anastos, Magee, Zentz and Fathallah placed 24th in the preliminaries, and the 200-yard free relay team of Fathallah, Anastos, Magee and Geary placed 22nd in preliminaries.

   Girls dance team: This year the dance team made it to state by placing sixth at sectionals.  In the past seven years, the dance team has taken eighth five times, ninth one time with one time not making it to the finals. The 2018-19 IHSA 3A State Final Competition took place from Jan. 25-26 at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Ill. The girls moved onto day two and placed eighth overall out of 12 teams.
