Have you ever thought about what it would be like to win the lottery? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live for longer? More importantly, have you ever contemplated which of these options you would take over the other?
MHS staff and students were asked these same questions:
Junior Nalani Stanczak responded, “I would choose to live for twice as long. There is so much that this world has to offer and I want to experience it all. With the little time we have on this Earth, I think having double the time to live would provide double the opportunities, experiences, and connections that I could create with people.”
However, Stanczak’s perspective was less popular, for more people responded that they would rather win the lottery.
Social Studies teacher, Susan Theotokatos, wanted to win the lottery.
“I would rather win the lottery because regardless of the time I would have on Earth, it would be more comfortable and less stressful knowing I had the financial means to live life well as well as my family members,” Theotokatos said.
Theotokatos isn’t the only one with this perspective, Junior Holly Scaramella also said that she would rather win the lottery.
“If I am living for twice as long, then everyone I know and love is going to die, forcing me to meet new people,” said Scaramella.
Scaramella added that if she won the lottery, she would invest it all so “[she] could be winning the rest of [her] life.”
However, there are downsides to everything. Scaramella said that oftentimes after someone wins the lottery, others become greedy for their wealth. Another downside, according to Scaramella is that “you didn’t work for that money, so you might not be as responsible with it.”
While both of these options of either living for twice as long or winning the lottery seem unrealistic, it is fun to think about the possibilities. What would you pick?
