The crack of the bat, the roar of the international crowds, and the pride of nations have once again taken the center of the stage. The World Baseball Classic, where teams from all over the country come together to compete to win the championship and prove who is the best country. This year the tournament had elite talent, crazy upsets, and unforgettable memories.
The tournament is separated into four different pools, (A-D) and is filled with five different teams. Each pool plays at a different stadium in a different country. There are two stadiums in the U.S. one in Tokyo and one in Brazil. Team powerhouses like Team USA, team Japan, and the Dominican Republic entered as the favorites, but other nations have been on the rise including Italy and Venezuela.
In the early rounds the teams play for a spot in the bracket to compete for the title. Superstars like Shohei Ohtani (Player for team Japan) and Juan Soto (Player for Dominican Republic) delivered clutch moments for the team. Then as the early rounds began finishing up and teams began clinching their spots in the tournament. Dominican Republic clinched their spot in the tournament coming in hot. The team lead almost every stat in the tournament including, batting average, home runs, runs, and earned runs average, and including Fernando Tatis Jr. leading the entire league in runs batted in. They were able to breeze through the first round but their run ended up short when they played the United States. Two clutch home runs happened for the U.S. when Gunner Henderson hit a homerun in the top of the 4th and in the same inning Roman Anthony hit another homerun that ended up being the winning run and moving team USA to the championship game.
Then on the other side, Venezuela upset fan favorite Japan 8-5. That gave them the momentum going into their next game where they faced off against Italy and they ended up winning 4-2. Then the championship came up and it was team Venezuela vs Team USA. Eduardo Rodriguez, pitcher for Venezuela, had team USA struggling. He threw for 4.1 innings with four strikes and only allowing one hit. The game was off to a slow start but in the top of the third, Maikel Garcia hit a sacrifice fly and then in the top of the fifth Wilyer Abreu hit a homerun and brought the score to two to zero. The USA looked like they were gonna go scoreless but Bryce Harper hit a clutch two run home run to tie the game going into the ninth inning. But all that momentum ended when Eugenio Suarez hit a one run double and took the lead which ended up being the winning run as the U.S. wasn’t able to fight back and lost the game.
Venezuela won the entire tournament and is now on top of the baseball world.
