During first semester, sophomores at MHS began to write their college essays in their Honors English 2 classes. This is the first opportunity for students to explore ideas to include in their actual essays next year.
Andrea Rusk, College and Career Resource Center counselor shared the importance of writing the college essay.
“The essay is usually going to be a personal statement,” said Rusk. “It gives the student the chance to pull out something that the college otherwise can’t see within their application.”
The essays consist of events or moments that have had an impact on students, whether that be a moment that happens during the school year or even during the summer.
“It’s not necessarily writing about something random or outside of the spectrum of what you’ll do at the school unless it also showcases something about you,” Rusk stated. “It could be you being a leader, it could be you being thoughtful, it could be you being inquisitive.”

Writing the college essay puts students in a better place for the future and makes them more prepared.”
