At MHS, girls volleyball has been a popular sport among each grade level. As this year’s season comes to an end, each of the four teams has noticed different types of improvements from when the season began.

The freshman girls volleyball team has a 4-6 record so far this year. Although they don’t have a perfect record, Mady West, freshman member of the team, said that the win isn’t what matters to the girls.

“We are best at working together and really pushing each other to be the best we can be in our games,” said West.

This season, the team has focused on teamwork and becoming in sync. As a team, the girls organized events like pasta parties in order to bond with each other as much as possible.

She said that the team thinks being close with each other will ultimately help them perform better on the court.

At time of publication, the sophomore girls volleyball team had lost more games than they had won, but regardless, Diana Orozco, sophomore, said that the biggest strength of their team has been recovering after a loss.

“After we lost, we would come back in the gym and work twice as hard,” said Orozco.

She described the team as having an extreme amount of determination, no matter the circumstances.

Orozco said that if the team had been more synchronized on the court, they would have been more successful than they were.

Off the court, the sophomore team was much like the freshman team, in hosting team bonding events to build stronger relationships with each other.

The JV volleyball team had won four games at the time of publication. Although this team only consists of nine girls (one of the them being injured), junior Hailey Prefontaine said that it has pushed the team to do better and that the two biggest strengths of this team has been communication and serve receive.

“Although at the beginning of the season these two things are not something I would consider to be our strengths, as we worked hard during the season, these things came to be things we were very good at as a team,” said Prefontaine.

She said that communication has helped the team become really close friends, and they have built such strong trust among each other.

The varsity team is going strong with a current 6-2 record. Varsity Manager Jessica Marvin, junior, said that the reason for that has been the determination of the girls.

“We want to try and win every game to have a sense of accomplishment,” said Marvin.

She explained that the team loves how it feels to win, so they strive for perfection during every practice and game.

Members on all four teams said that their favorite part about volleyball at MHS is their relationships with the other team members. Because they spend so much time with each other, it makes it that much easier to play as a team.

Some might say that at the end of the day, the success doesn’t come from how many times each team has won, but rather how much the team has grown.
