Over the years, Justin Bieber has not only changed his look but his voice and reputation. This has caused his fans to evolve and recreate their perceptions of this performer.

When Bieber first appeared on the scene, many thought Bieber’s music just attracted little elementary school girls, but now the world has a new viewpoint on his style. From his creative dance moves to collaborating with famous Rap artists, Bieber has drawn in new groupies with his new album Purpose.

“There are definitely more high schoolers and older generations that enjoy his music now,” said Ireland Hurney, junior.

After going to his Purpose tour in Chicago this spring, local fans felt the change in the concert’s setting when compared to previous concerts, such as the one in 2009.

One change I observed were the number of men at his concert in 2016 compared to the few back then. There were also older people, ranging from mid-twenties to even their fifties. The shift in audience shows that the Bieber fever has expanded.

Some think the shift to a more mature audience is a reflection of the singer’s own change in maturity.

“His music has changed since it is more pop now instead of generic love songs… I do not think it is bad at all since his voice is more mature now,” said Sophia Riportella, freshman.

Despite these noticeable changes, Bieber still gets hateful statements on social media, such as rude comments on his Instagram posts.

Also, Bieber has lost some of his original fandom since those previous fans enjoyed the “girly” songs rather than his current R&B style.

Riportella agreed with some of the fandom by preferring Bieber when he was still young and hadn’t received the negative publicity.

“I liked Justin better before… and I do not like his new look either. The dreads need to go,” said Riportella.

Many fans disliked the dreads, which could be why Bieber decided to get a buzz cut just recently.

It’s not just his hair that has changed his teen look into a more mature one.  He now wears punk clothing, and his body is covered in tattoos.

“He has grown up in many ways,” said Hurney. “For example, his music is more mainstream with an R&B style, which potentially caused him to get tattoos. I like his new look because he doesn’t care what the world thinks, and he is truly unique.”
