This past Saturday, the Senior Student Leadership team hosted a turkey trot to collect donations for local shelters.
Year-round, there are families struggling to put a meal on the table and afford necessities, but it’s especially during the holiday season.
This year, the Senior Student Leadership team put together an idea to bring together the MHS community while bringing in donations.
“The purpose of the turkey trot was to collect donations that included canned food, clothes, and more,” Senior Vice President Brady Rounds said. Rounds said that “there were enough donations to fill a pickup truck.”
“Everyone in Student Leadership is so thankful for anyone who participated in the event,” he said.
The best part of events like these is that they bring together the community for a greater cause. Every age group was represented, and the flexible one-mile or two-mile run/walk made the event accessible for everyone.
For example, even as a cross-country and track runner, it was Senior Precious Oyebanji’s first time doing a turkey trot.
“My favorite part of the turkey trot was warming up with and running with my friend, Chloe, because it just felt really nice. It brought me back to memories of doing the same with her during track. Also, our matching shirts,” Oyebanji said.
Oyebanji said that for her, the run was “just for fun”. “The adrenaline made it feel like I was competing, especially at the end. I wanted to see what I could do at this point since the end of cross country,” she stated.
For Rounds, however, his favorite part of the turkey trot was the community. “The best part of the turkey trot was seeing everyone show up for their community and have fun,” Rounds said.
But how does an event like this get planned? Who comes up with the idea, and who puts it in motion? If you’re interested in the answers to these questions, perhaps Student Leadership is the place for you!
“Student Leadership has monthly meetings for each class, [and] during these meetings we come together to discuss past events and plan future ones,” Rounds said. “There are also school-wide meetings every month that everyone can attend, even if you’ve never participated!”
For the turkey trot, Rounds said, “The senior class put together the turkey trot by first coming up with the idea during a monthly meeting, then our sponsor, Mrs. Kolcz, organised the location and time it would take place.”
“After that, we sent out an interest form and student leaders from all classes volunteered to make it all come together,” Rounds said. Events like this can only happen when there’s collaboration and a good support team behind the scenes to make the magic happen.
If you’re interested in joining, the next school-wide meeting is Dec. 1 at 8 a.m., and below are the Remind codes for each class:
